Cleaning for Allergy Season
As springtime moves into summer time, allergy sufferers are often at the height of their discomfort. Sneezing, itchy, water eyes, sinus headaches are all unfortunately present and will be for a while.
When you’re already suffering, house cleaning can seem like a monumental chore, especially when you consider all the dust and other allergens you’ll be forced to face while you’re cleaning!
How can you avoid doubly suffering? Make your cleaning count by eliminating allergens from your home to make for less discomfort:
The Bedroom
Bedrooms are notorious for holding onto allergens. Dust on the cabinets and mites in the mattress make for an uncomfortable sleep. Here are some tips for making your nights a little easier:
- Use bed casings to lock out dirt, moisture, and mites out of your bed. You may have seen the plastic versions, but they have come a long way since then! Now they’re created with extremely tight weaving that help keep gross stuff out. Once every month or two, take the covers and wash them: voila!
- Sanitize stuffed animals and decorative pillows which are less frequently washed and trap dust. If they can’t easily be washed, throw them in the dryer on the hottest setting for 20 minutes—the heat kills dust mites.
Throughout the House
While you spend your nights in the bedroom, you still have to function in the rest of the house, too! How can you minimize dust and allergens in every room? Try these tips:
- Switch to a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner to remove 99% of allergens.
- Run a dehumidifier. Mold and mildew thrive on moisture, so if you can remove excess moisture from the air you can inhibit their growth.
- Dust with static! Microfiber cloths particularly create a static charge on dust that causes it to stick. When you just wipe the dust with a cloth, it spreads up into the air. Using static to clean dust will keep it contained.
Don’t let allergies get you down this season—hit them where it hurts!
